Residents of Murcia, an autonomous community in Spain, were recently shocked to see their region flagged up as one of the most dangerous places in the entire country. It was the attorney general for Murcia who accidentally claimed that there had been 113 murders in Murcia in 2008, when the actual figure was only 25, three less than last year. That error made it look like Murcia was the third most unsafe place in Spain after Barcelona which has 171 murders annually and Madrid which has 127 murders every year.

Manuel Lopez Bernal, Murcia’s chief prosecutor, said: The error could have been due to two different factors. Firstly, some of the cases may have wrongly been initially opened as a murder investigation when murder was later found to not actually be involved, Secondly, cases assigned to one court and then passed to another were entered in the figures as two separate proceedings.

In fact Murcia is a very safe and worthwhile place to visit. The region has grown incredibly quickly over the last few years due to a boom in construction which gave very welcome boost to the economy. This meant that the comarcas, or counties, such as Bajo Guadalentin, Comarca del Rio Mula, Huerta de Murcia and Campo de Cartagena have all seen massive growth in the 21st century before the impact of the recession.

Since then the average price of a property in Spain fell by almost four per cent in the second quarter of 2009 and by 7.7 per cent year on year, according to the latest figures released by the Spanish National Institute of Statistics (INE). The data also shows that resale Spanish property values dropped more slowly. Resale Spanish home values fell by 12 and a half per cent in the 1st quarter of 2009, but slowed to a decline of 11.2 per cent in the 2nd quarter. However Spanish areas such as Murcia which are traditionally popular with foreign investors are holding up well.

This is due in part to the city of Murcia being ideally located inland but not too far away from the sea in the south eastern corner of Spain. Murcia has a long history dating back to its foundation during Moorish times. The Moorish castle on Monteagudo Mountain is a great place to get a view of the whole city. Some of the other main sights of Murcia to see are the Palacio del Almudi, the Salzillo Museum, the Iglesia de San Esteban and the Iglesia de San Esteban.

Murcia is served by the international airport San Javier which has connections with places such as Barcelona, Blackpool, Brussels, Edinburgh, Helsinki, Liverpool, London, Manchester, Madrid, Nottingham, Oslo, Trondheim and Palma de Mallorca. Whether you are hoping to go for a holiday or buy property there, Murcia is an excellent choice. It is easily accessible, not far from the beach and culturally rich to boot. Above all Murcia is particularly Spanish in character with very safe streets and the recent incorrect quotation to the contrary should not be taken out of context.
