You’ll have plenty of things to do during a family holiday to Mallorca. In fact, the problem is not finding enough things to do, but deciding which one’s you should do first. Here’s a guide to five of the best family days out in Mallorca to keep everyone entertained.
1. Old Fashioned Train Ride to Soller
No family holiday to Mallorca is complete without a trip on this delightful train ride. This is a real, old fashioned wild west style train, so it’s not your average train journey. Starting at Palma Station, the journey takes you all the way to Soller at the north of the island. Along the way you’ll pass by spectacular scenery including tiny villages, olive groves and spectacular mountains.
Because the journey is only about an hour in length, you’ll have the whole day to spend in Soller when you arrive. This is a fantastic little place to pass an afternoon, and there’s plenty to do in the town to keep you busy. One of the things many people do here is visit the beach, but you could also take a trip on a tram. And then when you’ve had enough, just hop back on the train and enjoy the journey going in the other direction.
2. Caves of Drach
You will certainly hear about the Caves of Drach when you arrive in Mallorca because they are one of the best known attractions on the island. And with good reason – a trip to the caves makes for an exciting excursion that the whole family will enjoy.
The caves comprise of a large cave system, including three large chambers: the White Cave, the Black Cave and the Cave of Luis Salvator. You will be able to take a tour through all of these enormous caves, and will end up at Lake Martel, an underground lake which happens to be one of the biggest of its kind in the world.
The lake is the highlight of the trip, but if you thought just seeing it was good enough, you’ll love the classical music concert that is put on by a group of musicians on boats. You’ll also see some spectacular underground formations in the limestone, all of which will make it into a trip to remember.
3. Alcudia Town
Alcudia is situated in the northeast of the island. It is a small, historic town that is quite typical of Mallorca. It first became a settlement as far back as 700 BC, but the Romans built their own settlement here when they arrived, but this town was then destroyed in 426 AD.
During your trip to Alcúdia, make sure you visit the interesting Museu Monográfic, which is home to a large number of fascinating Roman artefacts. But the highlight of a trip here is the Theatre Romá, the Roman amphitheatre that makes up one of the 20 still present in Spain. There is also a medieval chapel that is worth seeing nearby called the Oratori de Santa Anna.
4. Capocorb Vell
For a great day trip in Mallorca, make sure you visit the prehistoric village of Capocorb Vell. This is one of the biggest and best preserved of its kind in the whole of Western Europe, and is sure to prove a fantastic educational experience for the whole family.
In the village you will find the remains of a large number of houses, as well as a few talaiots, which are megaliths from the Bronze Age. A trip here will be of great interest to anyone who likes history, but the kids will also enjoy it as it makes for a fascinating experience.
5. Palma Aquarium
If you are tired of historical trips following a day out at Capocorb Vell, it’s time to head to Palma Aquarium. This is one of the must see attractions during your trip to Mallorca, as it is one of the best marine parks in the whole of Europe.
You’ll easily be able to spend the best part of a day at the aquarium, which is found at Playa de Palma. In total there are 55 aquariums here, housing about 8,000 fish, sharks and a whole wealth of sea life, swimming around happily in five million litres of water.
Visit the Old World, Jungle and New World zones where you will be able to see a huge variety of sea creatures. And prepare yourself for the Big Blue, the biggest individual aquarium in Europe where you will find, amongst other things, an impressive collection of sharks.
