I recently traveled from Detroit to Atlanta on Delta/Northwest Airlines. I must admit my dread as my only experience with the new airline security regulations four years ago was agonizing.
I had heard of the newer rules regarding liquids and gels that would be carried in carryon luggage, however I didn t really pay attention to the details as I had no immediate travel plans. I knew I would have to find an accurate source for determining what was what.
The online site for the above mentioned airline had detailed information available about how to pack items such as shampoo, lotions and gels. I read through carefully and although I read the information about the size of bottles allowed, I didn t pay attention to the size of zip log bag that was also recommended. I always pack way more than needed; therefore I decided to use the largest zip lock bag in my pantry. I needed to carry wrinkle creams, shampoo, conditioner, other hair care products and of course toothpaste and mouthwash, the bigger the bag the better. The large bag held all of my items quite well and I placed the large zip lock bag full of gels, lotions and creams in my carryon bag and off I went to the airport.
Once in line at security, the recommendations for how to place my carry on items in the bins provided, were being made by my fellow travelers. You must take off your shoes said one! You must put your zip lock bag in the bin said another and so in the busy flurry of shoes, luggage and jewelry; I opened my bag and put the large zip lock bag full of products in a bin on the belt. When I heard an unfamiliar beep as it passed through the camera I knew instantly it was my bin being rejected and I was told to step aside. The cutest, and kindest security officer proceeded to demonstrate a quart size zip lock was the standard for the whole liquid carry on process and how it was much smaller than the bag I had used. His only dilemma was that I could only use one of the smaller bags which did not hold all of my items. My eyes grew wide with pleading as what would I do about the items that would not fit in my bag! I needed them all on my 5 day trip!
This handsome and kindly young man immediately produced another quart size zip lock bag, even though it wasn t really allowed and the remaining items fit beautifully into the bag....I beamed with happiness and thanked him profusely.
Since I was well in front of my traveling companions, I waited for a moment, to let my heart stop beating so fast and my breath slow down to a normal rate beyond the security area. When my friends caught up with me, they immediately asked How did it go? I described my experience and they all winced and asked me why I took the Ziploc out of the suitcase, as they never do. They carry as many as 10 quart size zip lock bags and have never gotten the one only allowed speech. I shrugged my shoulders and shook my head as all I could answer Well you missed out on the cute security officer. So there.
I learned a lot on my flight to Atlanta and back. Airline personnel were much more pleasant and accommodating. The airplane seats seem so much smaller and the landing and takeoff process seemed much less stressful for me anyway.
I will fly again soon as it was an overall pleasant trip and I still was able to bring all of my creams, lotions and gels.
