The Mata Rocks Resort is situated about a mile south of the village of San Pedro on the eastern side of Ambergris Caye facing the reef. With comfortable if basic accommodation it is a lot more than just a budget hotel. Whilst the beach is right on your doorstep there is a lot of grass in the water that gets washed up, and whilst the hotel staff assiduously clear it away each morning the grass in the water and the fact that the beach shelves slowly means you have to go out a long way to swim. Conversely that and the fact that the reff gives protection means it is very safe for small children to swim.
The only other slight drawback is that whilst all room rates include a continental breakfast, there isn’t an on site restaurant, although to be fair San Pedro is within walking distance, and there are numerous restaurants close by. If you book a junior suite then that has a kitchenette, as well as the obligatory fridge in all the rooms.
These two points might seem drawbacks, but they are small when one considers what is available to give you a great family vacation staying at the very nice Mata Rocks Resort.
You can choose every day to just be lazy and lie in a hammock enjoying the beach and the lovely views of the turquoise sea.
You can book trips to the exotic tropical jungles of Belize, and explore Mayan ruins and go to wildlife reserves.
You can scuba dive or snorkel some of the most beautiful coral reefs in the world and see many many tropical fish and exotic corals.
You can fish for many tropical fish including tarpon and bonefish, or you can enjoy walks down the beach, trips into San Pedro, or just relax and unwind far away from the stresses of 21st century life and the doom and gloom that seems to pervade society can be banished completely from your mind.
The Mata Rocks Resort really is a beachfront hotel, that means beachfront. All the rooms face the sea, and you can step right out from your room, onto the beach and into the sea.
